Migrating from Northern Italy, Gilberto “Beppi” Crema joins his cousins Terry and Dino in a small terrazzo business in St Kilda named Camillo Brothers.
Terry and Dino Camillo return to Italy while Beppi stays in Melbourne, continuing to grow the business.
The business expands from terrazzo into concrete, formwork and construction, and in doing so, Beppi continues to build his relationships with clients.
Beppi completes his first property development project, a block of 16 apartments in Ormond.
The business becomes a pioneer in in-situ, tilt-up precast construction.
Luciano, Romeo and Louis join the business with complementary areas of expertise: architecture, construction and finance.
The company name changes from Camillo Brothers to Crema Camillo. Luciano, Romeo and Louis grow the construction business by taking on larger industrial and commercial projects.
The company moves to its current headquarters at 262 Salmon Street, Port Melbourne and Cambar Precast is established.
A partnership with AMP sees Crema develop and build more than a dozen suburban AMP office buildings in the 1980s/1990s.
Crema establishes Piave, a premix concrete business in Port Melbourne. Piave supplies concrete to some of Melbourne’s largest projects at the time, including Crown Casino and Eureka Tower.
Crema acquires Pentridge Prison from the State Government of Victoria.
The construction company changes its name from Crema Camillo to Crema Constructions.
Crema obtains the development approval for Pentridge Piazza and goes on to develop and build three stages.
Crema’s third generation start to work in the business across various areas including construction, development and finance.
The business continues to grow steadily in all areas including property development, construction, concrete and formwork.
Camillo Builders, smaller cousin to Crema Constructions, is established to focus on sub $25m construction projects.
SG Formwork is created as Crema’s expert concrete structure company.
